よく「東京は道が狭いから自転車道は整備できない」って言うけど本当でしょうか?
It is often said that our roads are too narrow for cycle paths, but is it true?
現実の道路を見ると、そうは思えません。
車道に空間を割き過ぎているのを意識できていないだけではないでしょうか?
The reality shatters the belief.
It is not about the lack of space but the lack of will.

This is the approximately same place with the 2 photos above. There was a very high quality Copenhagen-style bicycle path circa 1938. The total width of road today stays unchanged (25 m), but the world-class cycle superhighway of old days disappeared as if it never existed.
I again want to emphasize that you can actually find many roads which have enough space to accommodate bicycle paths of good quality. It is possible in a physical sense. What is interrupting (re-) installation of bike paths is mere psychological resistance, which is often accompanied by ignorance, wrong assumptions, and conventionalism.
